This cottage
house is located in the rain forest of Leilani estates. We are near some of the best snorkling spots in the state
of Hawaii. Volcano National
Park is also nearby, where you can visit and see an active, live , volcano. Not to worry, some of our Ohia trees, are over
100 yrs. Old and we hope will continue to get older. We are approximately 5 minutes
to the historic town of Pahoa, from Leilani Estates and it is about 30 minutes from Hilo. This town will make you feel like you have stepped back in time. The newest section to
Pahoa, has an Aloha gas station, Malama Market, with a deli section, Subway and the best and freshest Fish and Chips store,
anywhere! You can also drive down towards old Kalapana, the road known as “The
Red Road,” that ends at what is becoming the new “Kaimu”, a black sand beach at the end of the road, where
the lava flow took out Kalapana, that is forming and growing larger every year. While on the red road, take a dip in the Hot
Ponds. It is heated from volcanic thermal heat. It stays about 70-85 degrees all the time.
The cottage includes many comforts and amenities like a large screen television with a nice collection of
some of the most current movies on DVD. The furnishings are done with a tropical atmosphere. You have a full use kitchen with
all utensils and condiments. On the front lani, there is a gas grill. Upstairs in the loft, is a very comfortable Queen size
bed. There is a large spa on one of the two lanai's facing a fabulous view of the forest and botanical collection.
Trails weave around the entire property. You will see many rare plants, some of which are endangered
species and may not be seen anywhere else. You can also visit many of the local gardens that also boast large and unique collections
of palms and many other plants. This area of Hawaii is where many of the nurseries are located. The International
Palm Society recently visited this area May of 2004.
For a little
history about this property. The house was built approximately in 1981. My wife and I purchased this property from
Ken Foster who has not to long ago past away. Ken's dream was to have a botanical palm garden and Ken was an avid palm collector.
Many of you may have heard of him. He is some what a legendary palm man and he has traveled to many parts of the world
collecting palms. Ken lived here for about three years and he did start planting the original driveway. Unfortunately
his health was not good and he was forced to sell. I feel fortunate that Ken did contact me with his proposal to sell. It
was very important to him that another palm collector would purchase this property. We purchased this property in 2001 and
since then we renovated the entire house and added many more palms to the property. In 2003 we purchased an adjacent
property and also renovated it so we now have a total of three acres with a main house and a cottage guest house that we are
offering to share with you.
